Arboretum Engagement Session | Megan & Garrett | Lexington Wedding Photographer

There's a particular kind of ease that only comes from two people who have genuinely found their person. You can't manufacture it, and you can't pose it into existence. You just have to pay attention — and let it unfold.

That's exactly what happened when I spent an early spring morning with Megan and Garrett at The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky here in Lexington.

How Two People Found Each Other in Houston

Megan and Garrett have a love story that started the way a lot of modern ones do — on a dating app — but what makes it theirs is everything that came after.

They had each moved to Houston, Texas independently, each starting a new chapter on their own. And then they found each other. Now they travel together, play board games together, and bring that same relaxed, connected energy to everything they do — including, as it turns out, an engagement session in a botanical garden in early spring.

When I met them, it was immediately clear: these two are genuinely comfortable with one another. Not performatively comfortable. Actually comfortable. The kind of comfort that means they don't need to think about how they're standing or what to do with their hands. They just gravitate toward each other naturally. That's the stuff that makes photographs feel real.

An Arboretum Engagement Session in Early Spring

The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky is one of Lexington's most beautiful and underused locations for engagement sessions. Maintained by the University of Kentucky, it offers winding paths, open meadows, mature trees, and quiet corners that most couples haven't already seen a hundred times on Instagram.

We shot in early spring, when the garden hadn't fully woken up yet. If you've ever been to the Arboretum in March or April, you know: the blooms are still weeks away, and there's a certain stripped-back honesty to the landscape. No distraction. Just light, texture, and the people in front of your lens.

And the light — even on an overcast early spring morning — was soft and pretty. The kind of light that's flattering without being dramatic. The kind that doesn't call attention to itself, which means the attention stays where it belongs: on Megan and Garrett.

We wandered. We talked. We stopped wherever something caught my eye. That's how I work — no rigid shot list, no choreographed poses, no pressure. Just two people exploring a beautiful place together while I follow along and pay attention.

Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera

One thing I always tell couples before their engagement session: the point isn't to get a set of polished photographs. The point is to get comfortable.

Comfortable with the camera. Comfortable with me. Comfortable with the idea that you don't have to perform — that the way you already are together is more than enough.

Megan and Garrett arrived already halfway there. Their ease with each other meant that from the first few minutes, we were just... talking. About Houston, about travel, about the wedding coming up in June. And while we talked and walked and laughed, I made photographs.

By the time we finished, they weren't "posing for engagement photos." They were just themselves — in a beautiful place, with soft spring light, on a quiet morning in Lexington. That's the goal. Every time.

Getting Married at Apiary Fine Catering & Events

Megan and Garrett are getting married on June 26th, at Apiary Fine Catering & Events on Jefferson Street in downtown Lexington, one of the most elegant and distinctive event spaces in Central Kentucky. I cannot wait to photograph the day!

If you're planning a wedding at Apiary, or anywhere in Lexington or the surrounding area, I'd love to connect and see if we're the right fit for each other. The engagement session is a big part of that. It's not just about the photos; it's about making sure that by the time your wedding day comes, you already know what it feels like to have me there. Low pressure. A lot of laughter. And photographs that feel like you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year for an engagement session at The Arboretum in Lexington?

The Arboretum is beautiful in every season, but spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) tend to offer the most visually interesting backdrops — blooming trees in spring, turning foliage in fall. That said, as Megan and Garrett's session shows, early spring has its own quiet beauty, with soft light and an uncluttered landscape that keeps the focus on the couple.

How long does an engagement session typically last?

Most of my engagement sessions run between one and two hours. That gives us enough time to explore a location, get comfortable, and capture a variety of moments — without it feeling like an endurance event. The first 20–30 minutes are usually about getting warmed up; the best photographs often come in the second half when everyone has relaxed into it.

Do I need to have a specific look or plan for my engagement session?

Not at all. I work best when couples come as themselves — dressed in something they feel good in, without a rigid agenda. I'll guide us through the session, and I'm always watching for the moments that matter: a glance, a laugh, the way you lean into each other. You don't have to perform. I'm just going to pay attention.

Are you available for weddings outside of Lexington, Kentucky?

Yes — I'm available to travel throughout Kentucky and beyond. Whether you're getting married in Louisville, Cincinnati, Nashville, or further afield, I'm happy to talk through your plans and what travel would look like.
